Meet Your Therapist, Brittany
Hello Future Clients
If you made it this far, you’re looking for more information on your future therapist. However, I want to begin by introducing you to me personally. Not the therapist, just Brittany. I believe my personal experiences, both the struggles and the victories, laid the foundation for who I would become as a social worker long before my education and professional training refined my skills and gave me the confidence and tools I needed to shape me into the therapist I am today.
Where it all began….
As a child, my mother was a foster parent and my sister worked in the juvenile justice system and within child protective services. From a young age, I saw the women I looked up to dedicate a huge part of their lives to helping children in need and becoming a positive integration into “the system” with intention, care, and patience. So naturally, I came in contact with many social workers, troubled children, adults in vulnerable situations, therapists, CPS workers, case managers, public health workers, and more people in the helping profession. Those experiences inspired my passion for Social Work early on and my commitment to creating a more equal and compassionate system and become another helping professionals who genuinely wanted to help individuals and families reach their full potential.
My Personal Experiences
As a ambitious black woman who grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, there wasn’t many providers, teachers, or other helping professionals who looked like me. This led to experiences where I wasn’t always listened to, or made to feel like they knew me better than I knew myself. I’ve also been one of the only black women, or the only, in many work settings and had to navigate that as well. I understand that it isn't always easy to find a therapist who truly understands where you're coming from. I personally understand many of the challenges and unique cultural, social, and historical factors that shape the experiences of our community, including the stigma around asking for help. My goal is to create a space where you can show up exactly as you are, feel comfortable being yourself, and talk openly with someone who gets it and genuinely wants to support you. I provide a culturally sensitive, safe, and judgment-free space where you can feel heard, understood, and supported by someone who can relate to many of the experiences our community faces.
My Professional Experience
With over 7 years in mental health and 14 years in social work, I have worked in multiple settings including nursing homes, crisis residential centers, inpatient psychiatric hospitals, community mental health, child protective services, foster care, and within elementary, preschool, and early childhood centers. These settings gave me much experience in treating individuals experiencing a crisis, anxiety, depression, family issues, grief, communication issues, struggling with confidence and self-esteem, working with children and families, difficulty sleeping, experiencing negative thoughts, guilt, or shame, single parents with little support, relationships issues, difficulty concentrating, procrastination, and much more.
